Veteran cabbies taken on river taxi ride in salute to Pioneer Generation

SINGAPORE - Some 150 veteran taxi drivers became passengers in river taxis on Sunday morning.

They were brought on a half-hour river taxi cruise by the National Taxi Association. The association organised the cruise to show appreciation to the members of the Pioneer Generation.

"Many of these pioneer taxi drivers have been providing taxi services for more than 25 years... it is thus timely that we recognise and show appreciation to their commitment and effort," said association adviser Ang Hin Kee, who is an assistant secretary-general of the National Trades Union Congress.

The association picked the river cruise because the route passes through areas like Clarke Quay and Boat Quay which were vital to Singapore's history. Besides the cruise, the taxi drivers were also treated to lunch by the association.
