Two foreign workers receive SCDF Public Spiritedness Awards for saving toddler

SINGAPORE - Two foreign workers received the SCDF Public Spiritedness Awards on Friday for rescuing a toddler whose head was stuck between the rails of an external clothes-drying rack outside the service yard.

At the award ceremony, Deputy Commander 4th SCDF Division LTC Michael Chua said he wanted to say a big thank you to Mr Subramanian Shanmuganathan and his co-worker Ponnan Muthukumar.

MP for Jurong GRC Ang Wei Neng was also present to hand out the awards and tokens of appreciation.

Mr Shanmuganathan has been hailed as a hero after he climbed to the second floor of Housing Board Block 371 Jurong East Street 32 to save the two-year-old girl. Mr Muthukumar climbed up afterwards to help him.

The men were repairing the roads nearby when the incident happened on Thursday afternoon.

A video showing him saving the toddler has been circulating online, with Mr Shanmuganathan being called a hero for his quick response.
