SINGAPORE - The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) held a free fun fair for low income families on Sunday.

Held at the union-linked Downtown East resort at Pasir Ris, some 12,000 low income union members and their families received free theme park tickets, meal vouchers and game coupons yesterday.

It is the first of six carnivals the NTUC is holding this year to a tune of $1.5 million to let poor families enjoy themselves. It expects 60,000 union members and their families to attend the carnivals in total.

The carnival yesterday was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister Teo Chee Hean, who is the anchor minister for Pasir Ris Punggol GRC.

The NTUC announced that it has started a year long celebration to commemorate Singapore's 50th birthday next year. Details of the celebration were not immediately available, but NTUC assistant secretary general Zainal Sapari said that it will culminate in a mass display next year.
