Remembering Lee Kuan Yew

Thousands of overseas Singaporeans expected to watch live telecast of Mr Lee Kuan Yew's funeral

Overseas Singaporeans will join their countrymen back home in bidding a final farewell to Singapore's founding father Lee Kuan Yew on Sunday.

Thousands are expected at events organised by Singapore's overseas missions, business organisations or private groups where they can watch the live telecast of the state funeral.

Singaporeans living in cities including Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Bangkok, Manila, Taipei and Tokyo can watch the live streaming at the Singapore overseas missions.

In Beijing, hundreds of Singaporeans are expected at the Shangri-la China World Summit Wing, where the Singapore Chamber of Commerce has organised a live telecast of the funeral.

Mr Warren Wee, 45, who heads the organising committee for the event, said it decided on Thursday to organise a live telecast for Singaporeans in Beijing to give Mr Lee a final farewell together.

"Instead of everyone watching on their own at home, we thought it would be more meaningful for us to do so as one united people, something that Mr Lee Kuan Yew has always wanted for Singapore," he told The Straits Times.

Similar events will also be held in Shanghai at the Pudong Shangri-La Hotel, in Suzhou at the Jing Hope Howard Johnson Serviced Apartment, and in Xiamen at the Xiamen Indigo Hotel. Those living in Hong Kong can watch the live streaming at the Central Plaza.

In Seoul, about 60 to 70 Singaporeans will gather at Somerset Place Seoul serviced apartments to watch the live telecast organised by the Singapore Club.

In Australia, live streaming of the funeral has been arranged in Sydney, Tasmania, Adelaide and Brisbane.

Memorial events will also be held in London, Cambridge, Montreal and Nevada.
