Street peddlers set up shop beside women in skin tight dresses as both seek the attention of passers-by, beneath a newly built condominium.
This "clash of cultures" is also what give Geylang its character.
But that could all change as the Urban Development Authority plans to rezone the area bounded by Geylang and Guillemard road, between Lorong 4 and 22, from Residential/Institution to Commercial/Institution.
The move has been welcomed by businesses along the perimeter.
"I believe it's a good thing for us because once it is commercial, there might be more office crowds coming in." said Mr Willie Goh, the owner of GymKraft along Guillemard Road.
Whatever the change may be, it remains to be seen if Geylang will go the way of former red light district Keong Saik road or take on a whole different face altogether.
