On Wednesday, a team from Victoria Junior College won the final of four rounds in the revamped The Straits Times - Ministry of Education National Current Affairs Quiz this year, joining teams from Innova Junior College, Jurong Junior College and Hwa Chong Institution in the pool of winners.
The quiz, also known informally as The Big Quiz, aims to promote interest in various issues with a local perspective. It was decentralised this year, with four different quizzes held across the island to help broaden the participation rate.
To help with the preparation, primers on the various global and domestic issues of the day were run in the Opinion section of the The Stratis Times on Mondays. Talks were also given by the editors and correspondents of the newspaper before the competitions, and competitors were given the chance to ask them questions.
The contestants are tested on their knowledge of current affairs and are allowed to use in-game modifiers - such as doubling their points or deflecting questions to other teams - to gain an edge over their rivals. Winning teams received $600 in shopping vouchers, while the other participating teams walked away with $120 in vouchers.
Students in their first year of pre-university or Integrated Programme Year 5 from 25 participating schools formed teams of three to register for the tournament.
The quiz, now in its third year, is presented by the Singapore Press Holdings Foundation.
