Sultan of Brunei on three-day visit to Singapore starting Monday

The Sultan of Brunei will be in Singapore on Monday for a three-day state visit.

Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and his wife Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha will receive a ceremonial welcome at the Istana. They will pay a courtesy call on and be hosted to a state banquet by President Tony Tan and Mrs Mary Tan.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his wife Ho Ching will host an official lunch. The Brunei ruler will also meet former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.

On Tuesday, the Sultan will deliver the 34th Singapore Lecture on "The Future of Asean", which will be chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean. Previous iterations of the Singapore Lecture were delivered by distinguished statesmen including President of Indonesia Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel.

During the state Visit, the Sultan will visit the Institute of Technical Education College Central campus, the Singapore Armed Forces' Multi-Mission Range Complex and 3rd Division Headquarters, as well as the Singapore LNG Terminal on Jurong Island.

Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement yesterday that the visit "provides an excellent opportunity to review existing bilateral collaboration and explore new areas for both countries to work together".
