StarHub will be charging customers more for getting on its 4G mobile network from June this year, the first telco to do so here.
The telco has been offering its 3G customers access to 4G services as a free value-added service since September 2012. But the promotion, which was earlier extended for five months, will be ending next month.
From June 1, StarHub will charge $2.14 a month for its 4G Speed Boost value-added service which offers up to 75Mbps of surfing speed. It said that this is a promotional rate compared to the usual rate of $10.70 a month.
StarHub put up a notice on its website on Tuesday, and has started informing customers about the change via SMS. Only customers on its SmartSurf Lite, SmartSurf Value, SmartSurf Premium and SmartSurf Elite 3G plans will be affected. These plans were launched in September 2012, with tiered data bundles and a monthly subscription fee starting from 2GB and $38, respectively.
But customers on its SmartSurf HD plan, which costs $68 a month with a data bundle of 500MB, will continue to get 4G Speed Boost for free.
Those who do not want to pay for 4G Speed Boost can unsubscribe from it by calling its hotline 1633 or by replying to StarHub's SMS notice, which the telco is sending in phases until the end of this month. Their 3G mobile surfing speed will be up to 42Mbps.
