Squeals of delight rang out in the air as 60 children saw their dry cupcake mixture become a sticky chocolate batter.

The chemistry baking session, was part of the second day of the first The Straits Times Young Storymakers' Camp yesterday.

The camp is part of an outreach programme for the ST Schools team's latest learning resource, a scrapbook titled STep: My Year In The News.

The scrapbook is filled with fun current-affairs activities, stickers, embellishments and word-bank cards.

Eight-year-old Lee Kane Kiat from Palm View Primary said he enjoyed making the cupcakes, before adding cheekily: "Mixing the wet and dry ingredients was a little disgusting though, because it looked like dog poop."

In addition to baking, the seven- to 12-year-olds also visited the National Museum, where they got a behind-the-scenes sneak peek at how artefacts are unpacked before being exhibited, among other things.

"I liked going to the museum because it was exciting to see the Singapore Stone right in front of me," said Joshua Goutama, seven, from Anglo-Chinese School (Junior).

Using photographs taken with cameras from equipment sponsor Canon, the children ended the day with a craft session, recollecting their experiences of the day in a colourful scrapbook page under the guidance of craft experts from retailer PaperMarket.

To purchase the scrapbook, e-mail ngpbk@sph.com.sg or ccarmen@sph.com.sg.

The scrapbook retails at $49.90, but now costs $29.90 as part of a school holiday promotion until June 30. Go to facebook.com/STSchools to see more pictures of the event.
