SINGAPORE - The Singapore Red Cross is sending US$50,000 (S$62,400) in humanitarian aid to help survivors of Sunday's earthquake in Yunnan, China, the organisation said on Thursday.

The aid will be delivered by the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) and used to buy and distribute immediate relief supplies such as food, water, tents, amenity bags and medicine.

The death toll from the 6.1-magnitude earthquake currently stands at 589, with another 2,401 people injured.

Mr Benjamin William, secretary-general and chief executive of the Singapore Red Cross, said: "Rescue and relief efforts have been challenged by bouts of heavy rain and landslides in the past few days. Thousands of people remain vulnerable and we are working with RCSC to reach out to them as soon as possible."
