Singapore leaders congratulate India's Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi

SINGAPORE leaders have extended their congratulations to India's Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi on his party's victory in the country's general election.

In his letter to Mr Modi on Monday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the Bharatiya Janata Party's "decisive victory reflects the strong support and great hopes that Indian voters have in your leadership and vision".

"I am confident that you will bring your valuable experience as Chief Minister of Gujarat to bear as you lead India to fulfil its promise," he added.

Mr Lee also said both countries share excellent bilateral ties, underpinned by regular high-level exchanges and wide-ranging cooperation in fields including trade and defence, and will mark 50 years of diplomatic relations next year.

"I look forward to working with you to enhance our bilateral ties, and hope that you will visit Singapore at the earliest opportunity," Mr Lee added.

Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, in his letter, recalled the meetings and frank exchange of views with Mr Modi when he visited Gujarat in 2006.

"You have always shown a strong resolve to bring economic prosperity to the Indian people," Mr Goh said, adding that he is confident Mr Modi will lead his country to greater heights and further build on the excellent ties between India and Singapore.
