This year's Singapore Community Games drew to a close on Sunday and the three-month competition organised by the People's Association (PA) saw a record participation this year with nearly 10,000 people taking part. Among the sports that were fiercely battled out were badminton, bowling, football, sepak takraw and basketball.

The closing event on Sunday saw the finals of the sepak takraw and basketball being contested. The 900 teams have to win in their own district before they vie for top spot against the champions of other districts.

Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean who attended Sunday's finale said that the games, which were held from March to June, had been a success and achieved its goal of bringing Singaporeans from all races, ages and backgrounds to play sports together. "That's been wonderful. It's also a very good way for people to keep fit and healthy in a fun way rather than just simply exercising," he said, speaking at the Pasir Ris Sports and Recreation Centre.

Next year's games will feature three new sports - dragonboating, swimming and running - in addition to the existing seven.
