SINGAPORE - The way to Singaporeans' hearts is through their stomach, the US ambassador to Singapore Kirk Wagar is betting.

In a video posted online by the US Embassy on Tuesday, Mr Wagar slurps bak kut teh (pork rib soup) with relish and has a lesson on how to eat rice using chopsticks by food blogger Leslie Tay at Founder, a well-known bak kut teh restaurant here.

The 3min 25sec video titled "Ambassador and Mrs Wagar eat bak kut teh for the first time" on Facebook, also shows the couple eating you tiao (dough fritters) dipped in their bak kut teh soup.

"If you deep fry it, we'll like it," Mr Wagar, 45, says in the video, which has been shared more than 450 times by Thursday.

At the end of their meal, Mrs Crystal Wagar says her favourite dishes are the pig intestine soup and pork shoulder.

There were dozens of comments on Facebook, some asking where Founder was, and what they had ordered.

The US Embassy replied: "They feasted on bak kut teh, braised pig trotters, mixed pig organ soup, 'you tiao' (fried dough fritters), braised peanuts and salted vegetables!"

Some netizens also suggested other local dishes for the couple to try, including nasi lemak, roti prata and the king of fruits - durian.

The diplomat, who has been stationed in Singapore since September last year, posted on Twitter: "And I might finally try durian. I will probably regret that."
