SINGAPORE - The Singapore Armed Forces will take in its first volunteer corps next March but will not be aiming for "mass numbers", Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said on Thursday.

He was speaking at a dinner event to honour 300 volunteers who serve on the Defence Ministry's 41 boards, panels and committees.

Noting how many of these experts contribute their medical, safety, financial and legal knowledge, he added: "Volunteers like you act as catalysts for the system. I am thankful that many of you extended your service voluntarily."

The SAF volunteer corps, which is expected to include women, first-generation Permanent Residents and new citizens, will strengthen the SAF's operational capabilities, Dr Ng added.
