SINGAPORE - A record 400,000 used textbooks have been made available for free to needy students and the public this weekend, through a project by a major supermarket chain here.
Last year, 385,000 books were collected under NTUC FairPrice's Share-A-Textbook project, now in its 32nd year.
About 20,000 students from low-income families were invited to collect the used books, which were donated to the supermarket chain over a month-long collection drive, on Saturday.
The public can collect the books on Sunday between 9am and 3pm at the three distribution centres - Changkat Changi Secondary School, Gan Eng Seng School and Yio Chu Kang Secondary School.
There, they can also browse through and select other books such as dictionaries, encyclopedias and assessment books.
NTUC FairPrice CEO Seah Kian Peng said: "Through the kind donations of textbooks, everyone who have played a part in this project have helped to lessen the financial burden on low income families as well as to help conserve resources by reusing and recycling."
More than 600 volunteers were involved in collecting, sorting and distributing the books this year.
