SINGAPORE - Some 24 military units from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) were honored with Best Unit awards, the Defence Ministry announced on Sunday.
A yearly affair, the awards are given out to units that do well in combat readiness, operational proficiency and administrative excellence.
This year's notable winners include 122 Squadron, which triumphed as Best Air Combat Support Squadron, in part due to its wealth of experience from real-time operations. It was one of the first responders to offer aid relief after Super Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines last year. It also dispatched a C-130 aircraft to search for the missing MH370 flight more recently.
Long-time champion 1st Commandos took home the Best Combat Unit for the 11th consecutive time - its 28th win since the awards began in 1969, while Best Ship went to the RSS Formidable, the stealth frigate's second win since 2008.
All units will be presented with the awards by Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen and President Tony Tan Keng Yam at the SAF Day Parade at the Safti Military Institute on Tuesday, July 1.
