President of European Council calls on Singapore's President Tan

SINGAPORE - The president of the European Council, Mr Herman Van Rompuy, called on President Tony Tan Keng Yam on Monday, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mr Van Rompuy, who is on a two-day visit to Singapore, will meet Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Tuesday.

A ministry statement said he and his delegation were hosted to a luncheon by President Tan on Monday, during which both leaders reaffirmed the close relations and good cooperation between Singapore and the European Union.

They also exchanged views on regional and global developments, including the discussions at the Group of 20 (G20) Summit over the weekend in Australia. PM Lee attended the meeting of global leaders.

The European Council, an arm of the European Union comprising the heads of state of the member countries, is a strategic body that provides the Union with general political directions.
