Portraits of island life: Pulau Ubin over the years

SINGAPORE - Rustic and rural, Pulau Ubin's charm has always lain in its quiet surroundings with kampung houses and forest paths, reminding Singaporeans of a slower time in years past. The 10.2 sq km island, about the size of Changi Airport, hit the headlines in April when a notice by the Housing Board led islanders to believe that 22 homes would be evicted for the development of an "adventure park".

The Government has since clarified that the island is to be kept in a "rustic state for as long as possible". On Ubin Day last Sunday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong highlighted how the Government, working with the community, will roll out a series of initiatives to retain Pulau Ubin's charm as a rustic haven over the coming months. These include studies that tackle the erosion of its shoreline, which has receded by as much as 40m in areas in northern Ubin, to planting trees and supporting the recovery of endangered bird species.

In the meantime, we look back at the island over the years in pictures.
