SINGAPORE- An online petition to rename Changi Airport to Lee Kuan Yew (LKY) International Airport was submitted to Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew on Tuesday with about 12,500 signatures.
The signatures were collected between March 25 and March 30, according to the organiser, who goes by the moniker "Remembering LKY".
"Minister Lui thanked all supporters for the effort taken to bring forth this proposal. He will bring this up to the government for consideration," the organiser wrote in an update on petition site change.org on Tuesday.
The petition also included reasons stated by supporters of the change.
One supporter, who goes by the name Li Ting Lau, wrote: "He is a great man and I hope everyone who lands on Singapore will be able to hear his name first before seeing our beautiful city."
In starting the petition, the organiser had said: "We hope that naming the airport after the late Mr Lee will help to serve as a constant reminder to present and future generations that the spirit of LKY lives on… Now and Forever."
Mr Lee died on March 23 at the age of 91. In the week of national mourning that followed, hundreds of thousands of people paid their last respects to him at Parliament House after queueing up for hours. They also rallied together in the rain and lined the streets during his state funeral procession on March 29.
