NMP select committee to meet in July

SINGAPORE - The select committee which considers Nominated Members of Parliament (NMP) hopefuls will be meeting in July to draw up its shortlist of eligible candidates.

Of the 36 names put forward, 22 were from the general public.

When finalised, the list will be forwarded to the President for his appointment, said the Office of the Clerk of Parliament in a statement on Monday.

The Special Select Committee has consulted with elected MPs, seeking their views and comments on the persons proposed in accordance the Constitution, it said.

The views of the referees on the persons proposed have also been obtained, the statement added.

The committee, chaired by Speaker Halimah Yacob, includes MPs from both sides of the House.

They are: Defence Minister and Leader of the House Ng Eng Hen, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Grace Fu, Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC MP Dr Janil Puthucheary, Sembawang GRC MP Ellen Lee, Workers' Party chief Low Thia Khiang, Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs Masagos Zulkifli, and Minister of State for Education and Communications and Information Sim Ann.

The closing date for the submission of names was May 20.

Some 14 candidates were from the seven functional groups representing organisations from business and industry, the professions, the labour movement, social service organisations, civic and people sector, tertiary education institutions, and media, arts and sports.
