SINGAPORE - Residents in Nee Soon now have another community bonding space.

The rooftop of a multi-storey carpark in Yishun has been turned into a community garden by the Rooftop Farming interest group made up of some 18 residents in Nee Soon South Zone D.

The garden was launched by MP (Nee Soon) Lee Bee Wah on Sunday morning.

The garden's aim is to grow a community spirit among residents, as they gather, interact and work together to keep it clean and green. Their fruits of labour so far? Vegetables such as spinach, kang kong, lettuce and japanese bitter gourd.

"As urban living is already so limited in space... I believe this garden at the roof of a multi storey car-park will resolve space issue. It will be an excellent space for lovers of plants to commit themselves to gardening; a great opportunity for residents to share similar interest in the community," said Ms Lee.

During the event, volunteers also encouraged smokers to only smoke six designated points in the neighbourhood.
These points were set up as part of a Nee Soon South smoke-free programme, which started in January 2014. While smokers are encouraged to use designated smoking points, there are no penalties if they choose not to.

On Sunday, volunteers also encouraged smokers to stop smoking and distributed anti-smoking brochures from the Health Promotion Board.

Ms Lee said that the smoking cessation programme is part of the precinct's continual effort to educate smokers to use designated smoking points and to create awareness that help is available for smokers who are keen to quit.
