SINGAPORE - Jurong visitors and residents can now enjoy a new pedestrian mall that officially opened on Sunday near the JCube shopping mall.

The new 270m-long J Link, a project led by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), replaces a narrow and crowded covered walkway that used to link Housing Board flats, the Jurong East MRT station and the Science Centre Singapore.

It also has several unique public spaces for residents and visitors to take part in community activities or gather with their families and friends. These include a pavilion with a green roof, called Canopy, where an outdoor movie screening has already been held.

The URA and National Heritage Board (NHB) have also created a heritage corner where people can learn more about the history of Jurong from information panels. An art exhibition corner will showcase exhibitions of residents and local artists' works.

The URA said that residents had been extensively consulted on the new pedestrian mall's features, and their suggestions had included the new children's playground and more benches.

Opening the pedestrian mall, Second Minister for Environment and Water Resources Grace Fu, who is also adviser for the area's Yuhua grassroots organisations, said: "We will continue to involve the local community and Singaporeans in our plans for the Jurong Lake District, so that it will be a district by the people, for the people."
