Videos, guidebooks and training courses will be rolled out to boost safety in three areas: work at heights, cranes and formwork.

Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Manpower Hawazi Daipi on Wednesday said these three areas were identified as particularly high-risk tasks because they were the cause of many workplace fatalities last year.

In 2013, 14 of the the 17 fatal accidents involving falls happened while working at heights. Four fatalities were caused when cranes were used while another four workers were killed in formwork-related accidents. Three workers have also died while doing formwork-related accidents since the start of this year.

"These accidents could have been prevented through proper management of workplace hazards. Hence, we need to intensify our efforts to improve standards in working at heights, crane and formwork activities," said Mr Hawazi.

The Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council will be launching these new safety initiatives in the coming months.

Mr Hawazi was speaking at the WSH Council's annual Programme-based Engagement Plus Forum on workplace safety at the Raffles City Convention Centre.
