SINGAPORE - The restructured Advisory Council on Community Relations in Defence (Accord) with its three new councils will allow it to specialise and focus on the different groups of the public in its effort to raise understanding of national service (NS).

The three councils are: the Employer and Business Council, the Educational Institutions Council, and the Family and Community Council.

On Monday, the new Accord, chaired by Second Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing, met for the first time today at Safra Toa Payoh.

During the meeting, members discussed extending outreach to raise public awareness on the role of NS and the need for defence.

The council also aims to explore ways to strengthen and recognise both the public and servicemen's support of NS and Total Defence, as well as develop new initiatives that address the needs of everyone involved in the country's defence.

Fifty-two new members and 17 existing members were appointed to the new Accord and its sub-committees. Seven current members stepped down today as well.

Accord was formed in 1984 with its members coming from different segments of society to provide feedback to the Ministry of Defence and to generate support and awareness for NS.
