More support and recognition will be given to operationally ready servicemen (NSmen), said Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen on Thursday.

More details will be announced when the Committee to Strengthen National Service wraps up its deliberations in June, said Dr Ng, adding that the committee is considering a set of "meaningful" benefits.

"We want to centre the recognition benefits by giving them a greater stake in Singapore, whether it's housing, health or education," he said.

He was speaking on the sidelines of his visit to a fortnight-long military exercise involving 800 personnel from the Army, Navy and Air Force.

The exercise was also the swansong for 450 NSmen from 702 Guards, who have completed their 10-year operationally ready national service training cycle and will join the Mindef Reserve.
