SINGAPORE - When Parliament sits next week, starting Monday, four topics will seize the attention of members of the House.

These are the Committee of Inquiry (COI)'s report on the Little India riot; recommendations for MediShield Life; a new operating model for the public bus system; and Central Provident Fund (CPF) savings.

Slated to sit for three days, the House will see two ministers respond to the riot report.

Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, who is also the Home Affairs Minister, will give the Government's position on security-related issues while Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin will deal with the subject of foreign manpower.

The COI report, released on Monday, made eight recommendations, most of which were on preventing future riots. These include beefing up police manpower, cutting the layers of authority needed to activate emergency personnel, and improving communications for officers to get a better picture of the ground situation during public disorder.

The House is also expected to endorse the MediShield Life recommendations that were made by the review committee last week.

The new medical insurance will give cover to all, even those with pre-existing medical conditions, and for life.

The sitting is expected to kick off with at least seven questions on a new bus contracting model that overhauls the current public bus system. With CPF, MPs including Ms Lee Bee Wah (Nee Soon GRC) and Mr Gan Thiam Poh (Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC), want the Government to consider raising the interest rates and allowing greater flexibility for people to withdraw their money.
