SINGAPORE - Eight one-room rental flats in Marsiling got a facelift from the students and People's Action Party (PAP) representatives on Sunday, under a project by the party to celebrate the 60th year since it had been founded.

About 150 volunteers cleaned and painted the rental units in two Marsiling HDB blocks. With them were Sembawang GRC MPs Mr Hawazi Daipi, Ms Ellen Lee, Mr Ong Teng Koon and Mr Vikram Nair.

Also lending a hand were lawyer Amrin Amin, 35, engineering firm Hai Leck Holdings deputy chief executive Cheng Li Hui, 38, and business conglomerate Keppel Corporation's director of group strategy and development Ong Ye Kung, 44. All three have have been volunteering in the constituency, and are widely expected to be fielded as potential PAP candidates in the next general elections.

Residents like Madam Roslina Zainuddin, 50, who is paralysed from the waist down and can't work, were thankful for the help.

"I move around in a wheelchair so it's difficult for me to sweep and clean the house. They really helped me a lot," she said.

Said Mr Amrin: "Residents here are very warm and have been very friendly and supportive."
