SINGAPORE - A man in his 60s died on Friday morning after becoming trapped under two metal racks which apparently fell on him at a fruit storage facility.

Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) officers arrived at the building at Pandan Loop in Clementi - owned by Gardenia bread maker QAF - to find him pinned under two 4m-high racks which were stacked on top of each other.

Each contained about 70 crates of fruits. SCDF officers had to manually remove the crates before moving the metal racks with the help of two forklifts.

It is believed that the racks had toppled over, pinning the man underneath.

The SCDF said in a statement: "The rescue operation had to be cautiously carried out as any abrupt movement of the toppled racks would cause the adjacent metal racks to also topple over."

The man was pronounced dead by an SCDF paramedic and the case was handed over to the police.
