Even as Geylang is upgraded and modernised, its Malay character will be preserved, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Friday at the 50th anniversary celebration of the Geylang Serai Market.

This will be done by redeveloping existing buildings in the area, such as the Wisma Geylang Serai.

A tender will be called later this year, and the workgroup helmed by Minister of State for National Development Maliki Osman has been busy with the project, said Mr Lee.

At the same time, little touches, such as Malay motifs, will be added to lamp posts and street signs in the area, which has served as a the social centre of Singapore's Malay community.

The Geylang Serai market, which traces it roots to 1964 before Singapore's independence, is an important part of the community. It had been opened 50 years ago by founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, said PM Lee, adding he was especially happy to be celebrating its anniversary.

"From humble beginnings, Pasar Geylang Serai now occupies an important place in our social landscape," he said.
