SINGAPORE - More than 6,000 people visited Tanjong Pagar Railway Station on Friday as it opened its doors to the public on Good Friday.
The Singapore Land Authority (SLA) announced in February that the station would be open to the public on all public holidays, starting from the second day of the Chinese New Year.
The number of visitors thronging the tracks on Friday was about four times the number recorded on the second day of Chinese New Year.
The 26km strip of former railway land slices through the island from Woodlands in the north to Tanjong Pagar in the south. It was previously used by Malaysia's Keretapi Tanah Melayu or KTM railway.
Built between 1929 and 1931, the station was closed in 2011 and gazetted a national monument in 2013.
Many visitors took photos along the tracks on Friday while others sat chatting with their family and friends.
