SINGAPORE - Jurong residents and visitors can now walk more easily from Jurong East MRT station to the Science Centre Singapore, the Jurong Regional Library and nearby Housing Board flats - with a new pedestrian mall that opened on Sunday.
Here are the highlights of the $4.8 million, 270m-long J Link:
1. Covered walkway
The 5m-wide covered walkway has been upgraded with aluminium roof panels to reduce noise levels and new lights.
It has also been equipped with wave-like seats, and lined with plants.
Two benches made from the wooden seating planks from the former National Stadium will be added next year.
2. Heritage corner
The heritage corner comprises 12 special structures that reflect Jurong's history.
For instance, the old bricks represent the kilns in Jurong, the concrete drums represent industrial development, and the film roll structure depicts the first and only drive-in cinema in Singapore.
3. The Canopy
The pavilion with a curved, green roof provides a column-free, unobstructed space for community events.
The 600 sq m, 13m high space comes with two fans for ventilation, and the lighting can be programmed for different activities.
4. Art exhibition space
This space will showcase roving exhibitions of residents' and local artists' works.
5. Children's playground
The playground was included in response to residents' feedback.
It was designed to complement the rolling landscape of J Link.
