Five Malay-Muslim groups to take part in study to strengthen leadership

SINGAPORE - Five well-known groups will undergo a study by a consultancy to strengthen governance and leadership practices in Malay/Muslim organisations.

These groups are: the Association of Muslim Professionals (AMP), Muhammadiyah Association, Pertapis, 4PM and Ain Society.

The analysis will look into their leadership and organisational competencies and identify performance gaps. A training roadmap will then be developed for these organisations.

"The roadmap will be aligned to national training plans, schemes and initiatives, to ensure that the Malay/Muslim Voluntary Sector remains relevant and effective in meeting the changing needs of the people we serve," said Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for Communications and Information and Minister in-charge of Muslim Affairs.

He was speaking at the inaugural governance seminar for Malay/Muslim organisations held at the Lifelong Learning Institute in Eunos Road on Saturday. The seminar brought together key Malay/Muslim leaders and experts to share best practices on promoting sound governance in the running of voluntary welfare organisations.

The seminar is part of plans to build up these organisations so that they will be better equipped to expand their outreach efforts to the community.

In April, a Capability Development Fund was launched for such organisations to tap on to improve their organisational development. Said Dr Yaacob: "Good governance is a desirable characteristic of our Malay/Muslim voluntary sector. It will not be easy. But the gains will not only benefit the sector but also the community."
