Opposition politicians send condolences to PM Lee Hsien Loong and family

SINGAPORE - Opposition politicians conveyed their condolences to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong over the death of Mr Lee Kuan Yew on Monday morning.

"On behalf of the Workers' Party, I wish to convey my deepest condolences to you and your family on the passing of your father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew," a letter from the Workers' Party said.

It was signed by Mr Low Thia Khiang, Secretary-General of the Workers' Party and Member of Parliament for Aljunied GRC.

"Mr Lee served in public office for almost his entire adult life. His passing marks an end of an era in Singapore's history. His contributions to Singapore will be remembered for generations to come," the letter read.

Dr Chee Soon Juan, Secretary-General of the Singapore Democratic Party, said: "On behalf of the members of the Singapore Democratic Party, I send you and your loved ones my deepest condolences on the demise of your father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew. In this time of personal grief, our thoughts are with you."

In a statement, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of Singapore said their party members were "deeply saddened" at the death of Mr Lee.

"He remains a model for us all, and a national forefather for our generations hereafter," the statement said.

The Singapore Democratic Alliance posted condolences to Mr Lee's family on Facebook.

Secretary-General of the Singapore People's Party, Mr Chiam See Tong, also sent a letter of condolence saying, "He was a great statesman, parliamentarian and a master of public policy."

"No one else has shaped modern Singapore more so than Lee Kuan Yew, since he became Prime Minister in 1959." he said.

"His absence from our 50th National Day Parade later this year will be particularly poignant to us."

Mr Lee died on Monday morning at the Singapore General Hospital aged 91.
