SINGAPORE - Unemployment here is low, and the strong growth figures should remain that way for the near- to medium-term, said Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin on Thursday.

As opportunities are created for people, the continuing education and training system must at the same time equip them with the ability to seize those opportunities, said Mr Tan at his ministry's National Day observance ceremony.

"Some sectors may fade away or evolve, individuals may want to change their professions, and that's where we come in to make sure that opportunities are provided."

Speaking to civil and public servants at the Central Provident Fund Building, Mr Tan added that people's relationships, culture and values are what make the "soul of the nation".

"Ultimately, the glue that brings us together is really the relationships.

"And that is something that as a Government, we can try to nurture and create opportunities for..., but you can't mandate that," he said.
