SINGAPORE - A community group of senior citizens is planning a series of events this year in memory of former Prime Minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew, who died in March.

About 50 cyclists from the Concern and Care Society, all of them above the age of 65, will be cycling about 800km from Singapore to Penang over eight days in May.

In September, the society will organise a one-day cycling event and carnival at East Coast Park called the Lee Kuan Yew Legacy Century Ride.

Meanwhile, the group also aims to collect 100,000 signatures from the public in a show of gratitude for the contributions of the late Mr Lee.

It hopes to complete and present the collection to the Prime Minister's Office by National Day this year.

The society's chief executive David Lee said the group started organising cycling expeditions in 2005 and members have cycled in many places overseas such as the United States, China, Taiwan, and Malaysia.

"We used to organise dinners and concerts more often for the old folks. But these activities never really built any bonds between the participants," he said.

"Through cycling, we really see them coming together and helping each other. The team spirit is great."
