SINGAPORE - The five Community Development Councils (CDCs) will showcase their respective projects in a community parade and brisk walk at Marina Bay on Sunday, and will be joined by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
The event, titled CDCs Celebrating Communities, is the first jointly held by the five councils to mark Singapore's Golden Jubilee.
It will feature mobile exhibits of several community projects spearheaded by each CDC.
The five Mayors - Dr Teo Ho Pin (North West CDC), Mr Teo Ser Luck (North East CDC), Dr Maliki Osman (South East CDC), Ms Low Yen Ling (South West CDC) and Ms Denise Phua (Central Singapore CDC) - will also take part along with more than 5,000 partners, volunteers and beneficiaries.
Speaking at a media preview of the event at the Library@Esplanade on Tuesday, Dr Teo, who chairs the Mayors' Committee, said:
"Over the last 18 years (since their incorporation) the CDCs have implemented various programmes ... and we've formed many communities of like-minded people coming together to pursue their interests and also to interact with the community.
"This is a time when we bring all these different segments to come together to celebrate."
Added Dr Maliki: "We hope that Singaporeans, not just those who are part of the programme, will come and see the energy of the various communities and that really is the spirit of what 50 years of Singapore is about."
Among those walking the route on Sunday are pupils Lee Jia Jia and Aran Arul, both aged five, from the PCF Sparkletots Woodlands kindergarten. They will be joined by their parents.
They will showcase the Go Green For Betty The Butterfly community initiative, which was launched in 2014 to raise environmental awareness among pre-schoolers in North West CDC.
And through the activities that pupils take home, parents are also reminded of green practices, said their teacher, Ms Masidayu Mohamed Yusof, 24. She will accompany a group of about 20 students from the kindergarten on Sunday.
