Call to donate used cameras to less privileged kids

A DONATION drive to collect used cameras for children from low-income or single-parent families is under way.

The initiative aims to obtain cameras for less privileged children, who will then get to use them in photography outings.

The idea came from Ms Lee Siew Yian, a photography enthusiast and volunteer who will organise the outings for children from Touch Young Arrows - an arm of Touch Community Services which reaches out to children from low-income families.

She had mulled over how to get hold of enough cameras for the children, and felt there were probably many people who own multiple cameras, with the older models just sitting unused in drawers.

She hopes that with the camera donation drive, which runs for three months from June 4, they would be able to get people to contribute their old cameras.

The target for the drive, organised by the People's Association PMET Division and Marine Parade GRC, is 200 cameras.

Said Ms Lee: "I'm excited about organising the photo outings for the kids."

The first outing will take place on July 19.

Members of the public and corporations can donate used cameras that are still in good condition to 11 collection points in Marine Parade GRC.

They are: Marine Parade CC, Kembangan-Chai Chee CC, Geylang Serai CC, Braddell Heights CC, MacPherson CC, Kampong Ubi CC, Joo Chiat CC, Mountbatten CC, Katong CC, Potong Pasir CC and TOUCH Young Arrows Eunos Club.
