Bigger, better Malay-Muslim activities in Tampines

SINGAPORE - For the second year running, the Malay Activity Executive Committee (MAEC) of Tampines will be holding a Hari Raya Bazaar at the community space next to Tampines MRT station, Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office and Tampines GRC MP announced on Thursday morning (May 7).

This year's bazaar will be bigger and better than the last; performers from Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia such as Sufie Rashid, Sarah Aqilah and J. Mizan will be invited to perform there.

Other countries, such as Brunei and Oman, have also been invited to showcase their cottage industries during the bazaar.

A small light-up from Tampines Avenue 5 to the community space will also be put up.

This is just one of the activities the committee is organising this year as part of SG50 celebrations. It is also the second year the MAEC has come together to coordinate activities planned for the community.

The committee is also planning to continue organising popular events, such as the Bulan Bahasa 2015 in Tampines. Launching on Sept 6, one day after the launch of the national Bulan Bahasa, the GRC-level celebration will see Ramli Sarip - also known as Papa Rock - performing a concert. Bulan Bahasa is an initiative by the Malay Language Council to encourage the use of the Malay language in everyday activities.

Another activity planned is giving out of Ramadan food hampers to needy families in the GRC. Around 200 families will receive food packages containing rice, cooking oil and sugar during Ramadan.

This is held with the community iftar, or the breaking of fast during Ramadan.

The committee plans to attract around 2,000 participants through its eight iftar sessions.

"The residents have enjoyed themselves very much last year," Mr Masagos said.

"We were encouraged by the response. That is why we want to do this on a bigger scale."
