SINGAPORE - Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong gave out the first of some 450,000 Pioneer generation cards on Friday evening, and promised there will be a "very big effort" to distribute the rest by the month's end.

The printing company, Medialink Printing Services, and SingPost have been working extra hard to produce, pack and deliver the packages, he said.

Mr Lee thanked about 100 pioneers, at an event at the People's Association headquarters near Lavender, for their contributions to Singapore.

"This is our way of saying 'thank you' for building Singapore," said Mr Lee.

"Your generation is a special one. Your contributions have shaped today's Singapore in so many ways."

He paid tribute to those who left a lasting legacy in their professions, including nurses, to whom he wished a happy Nurses' Day.

Others who toiled behind the scenes also "have been pillars of support in their own homes, to their spouses, and their contributions are no less important, and no less valued," he said.

Seniors who are 65 years old and above this year, and became a citizen before 1987, will receive a pioneer generation package in the mail in August. This will contain a personalised white card identifying them as a pioneer.

From next month, the cards can be used to get more subsidies at polyclinics, specialist outpatient clinics, and participating GP and dental clinics under the Community Health Assist Scheme.
