SINGAPORE - Six contractors will receive awards from the Housing Board for displaying good construction practices this year.

Factors such as good workforce management and construction quality were taken into account for the accolades, which recognise the effort that went into seven public housing projects.

One of them, Fernvale Foliage in Sengkang - built by Straits Construction and completed last November - boasts the highest ever public housing construction quality score of 94.2.

Singapore Institute of Architects president Theodore Chan, who was a member of the awards judging panel, said: "I attribute the (high score) to the contractor's application of as much precast technology as possible, which is less susceptible to workmanship problems."

Mr Tan Sze Pheng, architectural associate with Architects Vista and part of the team behind the four-block development, added: "There was a lot of coordination between contractors and architects, right down to how the tiles were aligned."

The other six projects, which include Punggol Waves and Treegrove @ Woodlands, also scored above 90 under the Construction Quality Assessment System (Conquas) - the industry's national yardstick for construction quality. The average score for public housing projects is 88.5.

Mr Chan said: "The built quality of public housing has improved over the years, and is now comparable to mass market private condos."

The awards will be handed out at a ceremony at the Shangri-La Hotel on September 10.
