Warm and wet weather to continue in first half of May, says NEA

SINGAPORE - The warm and wet weather seen in April will continue in the first two weeks of May.

In its latest forecast, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said that inter-monsoon conditions are expected to continue with low-level winds, which will be light and variable in direction.

Based on long-term statistics, May is the second warmest month in the year, after April.

In the next two weeks, four or five short-duration thundery showers can be expected in the afternoon, and two or three days of thundery showers can be expected in the morning, the NEA said on its website last night. Rainfall for May is likely to be near-normal.

Slightly hazy conditions can be expected on a few days, especially in the early morning, due to accumulation of particulate matter under light wind conditions.

The NEA said that for the entire month of April, Singapore experienced wet weather conditions on most days, with thundery showers occurring mostly in the afternoon.

On April 28, moderate to heavy thundery showers affected many areas of Singapore in the afternoon and evening due to the convergence of winds and strong daytime heating of land areas.

The heaviest rainfall that afternoon recorded 88.6mm of rain over the Mandai area.

About two thirds of Singapore received above normal rainfall for the month of April. The central part of the island around Ang Mo Kio and Lower Peirce Reservoir received the highest rainfall of 267mm to 324mm (55 per cent to 80 per cent above average).

The lowest rainfall of 67mm to 91mm (45 per cent to 70 per cent below average) was recorded in the east around Pasir Ris and Simei.
