SINGAPORE - In recognition of their water conservation efforts, an individual and two organisations won the PUB Watermark Awards on Tuesday.
The annual award, which was first given out by the national water agency in 2007, aims to recognise organisations and individuals for their contributions to conserve, protect and educate others about water. This year, 33 nominations were received.
One of the winners, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, reduces water consumption by using water efficient measures such as drip irrigation to water its gardens. More than 85 per cent of its water appliances are also considered water efficient according to the PUB's water efficiency labelling scheme.
Another winner, Mr Philip Chan, sustainability manager with Asia Square, took it upon himself to devise improvements to a pivot valve at the building's water tanks. The improved device, which will be rolled out within the next two months, helps to reduce water wastage due to water overflow.
Said Mr Chan: "I believe that saving every drop of water now is saving for our future consumption."
Over at Siloso Beach Resort on Sentosa, another winner, an Eco Tour Programme educates visitors on the environmental initiatives implemented at the resort. It also conducts tours for other hotel building managers to learn more about its water efficiency measures.
PUB's chief executive Ng Joo Hee said that water sustainability is a "co-created outcome" which involves efforts from everyone.
"Our winners, whether organisation or individual, are leaders in this, and we are both encouraged and inspired by their sterling effort," he said.
The three recipients will receive the award from Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Vivian Balakrishnan on Sunday at the Singapore Sports Hub.
