SINGAPORE - The National Climate Change Competition 2015 has been launched and it is seeking videos that will help Singaporeans understand the importance of climate change.

The annual competition, which has "Our Climate, Our Choice" as its theme this year, aims to highlight the close connection between people's daily choices and climate change, and the urgent need for action to mitigate its impact.

For example, people may contribute to climate change when they use electricity, as the energy is usually produced through the burning of fossil fuels. This releases gases, such as carbon dioxide, that lead to global warming. By conserving their electricity use, people can help reduce these gases.

Other climate-friendly habits include the use of tingkats, or food carriers, when ordering takeaway food from hawkers, walking or cycling, and drying laundry outdoors instead of using electric clothes dryers.

Students can take part in the competition under the schools category, while others can participate through the open category. The winners stand to receive up to $5,000 in cash prizes. The winning entries may also be used in a public education campaign.

The results will be announced in November.

To register for the competition, go to www.nccc.gov.sg by May 4.
