Shark's fin dishes will no longer be served at restaurants owned and operated by Marina Bay Sands (MBS), the integrated resort announced on Wednesday.

The controversial dish will also no longer be offered at events held in the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre.

The move is part of the company's global sustainability strategy that began in October 2013, according to its director of Sustainabilty Mr Kevin Teng.

"Removing shark fin from the menus across our different business units is a bold testament to our commitment to reducing our environmental impact," he said.

World Wildlife Fund Singapore's CEO Elaine Tan commended the resort's move, and said the "concrete action" would hopefully see more food and beverage outlets follow suit.

"Sharks are a crucial part of marine ecosystems," said Ms Tan. "Their populations have a direct impact on fish stocks, which in turn affect many things, including our food security in the future."

The integrated resort said it will also work with its tenants to encourage them to adopt sustainable practices, including recycling, reducing food waste and removing shark's fin from their menus.
