SINGAPORE - Four Secondary 1 students from Holy Innocents' High School were praised by a member of the public and by their school last week for carrying out a thoughtful act.
In a post on the school's Facebook page put up on Oct 24, students Kevin Shoo, Hafiz Rosli, Alphonzus Lim and Emmanuel Pang were hailed as "good samaritans" for removing a large trash bag on the road along Upper Serangoon and for carrying it to the nearest rubbish bin.
The woman who had witnessed their civic-minded deed e-mailed the school to compliment the boys for their action.
Writing anonymously, she said that she had been sitting at the bus stop next to Hougang Plaza and had seen the big trash bag in the middle of the road.
"It did not occur to me to pull it away," she wrote, explaining that she had the mentality that "someone will take care of it".
"I felt ashamed when I saw what happened next," she said.
She heard the schoolboys saying that the road was clear, before three of them sprinted across the road to grab the trash bag, while the fourth stood by to look out for cars. They were mindful of their safety and also carried the trash bag to a rubbish bin nearby.
"This act may seem small but it makes a difference to motorists who may find the trash bag a hindrance," she wrote, adding that it could also have posed a danger to motorists changing lanes suddenly to avoid the bag.
"Their integrity, moral uprightness and civic-mindedness are commendable and something that our youth these days could emulate," she wrote. "Good job, boys! And good job to the school!"
The school's Facebook post stated: "We are very proud of them! Well done!"
