School placement exercise for overseas Singaporeans starts on Monday

SINGAPORE - Children of Singaporean parents who have returned from working abroad can re-enter the mainstream school system through the School Placement Exercise which starts on Monday.

This exercise is for Singaporean children who are returning from overseas and wish to join secondary schools, junior colleges or the Millennia Institute at the beginning of the 2015 academic year.

They will need to take one set of centralised tests in October and November, for admission to secondary schools and pre-university institutions respectively. They will receive their school placement results in December.

For those unable to return in time to take the tests in October, the Education Ministry (MOE) will conduct a Supplementary Placement Exercise in December. Registration for this exercise starts in October. Those under this exercise will take the tests in late December and receive their school placement results in early February in 2015 for school admissions in the same month.

Children of returning Singaporeans seeking admission to primary schools can approach the MOE at any time of the year for assistance. The ministry will offer them a place in a primary school with vacancies near the child's home at a level appropriate for his or her age cohort.

The child may sit assessment tests conducted by the primary school to determine his or her level of attainment, so that it can help them settle into the school.
