They will pursue courses related to the environment and water sectors, such as civil engineering and atmospheric science, either locally or abroad.

This year, the seventh in which the scholarship is being offered, recipients will head to institutions such as the National University of Singapore, Cornell University in the United States, and Imperial College London.

The other six recipients at Friday's ceremony were given the National Research Foundation (Environment and Water Technologies) PhD Scholarship by the Environment and Water Industry Programme Office (EWI).

They will be pursue doctorates in specialised areas that will "enhance Singapore's ability to produce clean water, treat waste water and protect the health of Singapore's water systems".

Mr Chew Men Leong, chief executive of PUB and executive director of EWI, said: "The NEW scholarship augments PUB and NEA's ongoing efforts to groom the next generation of leaders and specialists who have the passion and ability to contribute to Singapore's efforts in water and environmental sustainability."
