Young explorers will get to chart their adventures at the brand new The Straits Times Young Storymakers Camp, created by the team behind the broadsheet's award-winning Little Red Dot weekly magazine.

The paper invites primary school pupils to go on a learning journey - held on June 23 and 24 - that will cover culture, history, science and more. They will:

  • Visit the ArtScience Museum's Dinosaurs: Dawn To Extinction exhibition;
  • Explore the Fort Canning lighthouse and walk the maritime trail;
  • Try a baking chemistry session, and much more.

Each day will culminate in a story- making session as they create pages for their very own books at an exclusive class.

While the visits are pupils-only excursions aimed at building independence and life skills, parents are invited to bond with their children during the story-making class, as they recount their stories and reflect on them.

Every story-maker will receive a copy of the latest learning resource from The Straits Times Schools team, called STep: My Year In The News, as part of the camp. The book has a retail value of $49.90.

The scrapbook binder is filled with fun current affairs activities, stickers, embellishments and word bank cards, which campers will work on after their day's journeys, guided by top trainers from craft retailer Papermarket.

Ms Debra Ann Francisco, creator of the book's English activities and a teacher of 14 years, said that scrapbooking encourages a sense of adventure, creativity and critical thinking in one go.

"The result is a beautiful memento that can be kept as a record of one person's life, set within national and international events," she said.

This exciting, non-residential camp is open to all primary school pupils from seven to 12 years old. Its programme lasts from 8.30am to 6pm, and participants can sign up for either or both days.

The course fees, $140 for a day and $200 for two days, include lunch, transport and all craft materials. Participants are to meet at the starting point, which is SPH Media Centre in 82 Genting Lane.

To sign up, e-mail jcchien@sph. com.sg or ccarmen@sph.com.sg, or call 6319-8174/6319-8533 to reserve places or purchase the scrapbook.

STep: My Year In The News 2014 will also be available at The Kidz Academy, held at Suntec Singapore from June 6 to 8, at a special launch price of $29.90.
