SINGAPORE - The Keep Singapore Clean Movement in Schools was launched on Tuesday morning, to get students to take ownership of the cleanliness of their schools and environment.

It encourages students to be responsible, and propose ideas, for keeping the places they frequent clean. These places could go beyond the students' classrooms to include the school campus and neighbourhoods nearby. All primary, secondary and pre-tertiary schools will be involved.

First announced at a teachers' conference in June, the cleanliness movement was launched by Education Minister Heng Swee Keat at Woodgrove Secondary on Tuesday.

He said: "Through the movement, students can learn to take ownership of our community spaces and our Singapore. They can become role models and advocates of a clean Singapore to their classmates, family members and people in the community."

The Public Hygiene Council, made up of representatives from various sectors, will support schools by providing resources such as litter-picking toolkits.
