Professor Cham Tao Soon, the founding chancellor and chairman of SIM University (UniSIM), retired from his position on Friday after about nine years at the helm.

Mr Gerard Ee has stepped down as chairman of the SIM Governing Council, which oversees the overall governance of the SIM Group, to succeed Prof Cham in both positions.

In 2005 Cambridge-educated Prof Cham, 74, was instrumental in helping to set up UniSIM, which runs its own degree programmes under a charter from the Education Ministry.

Prior to that, Prof Cham served as the president of the Nanyang Technological University for 22 years, from 1981 to 2002.

Mr Ee is also the president of the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants and the chairman for Council for Third Age, a government-funded group that promotes active ageing.

His previous appointments include chairman of the Public Transport Council, from 2005 until May 1 this year.
